I thought it would be fun (and maybe useful) to keep a journal of my photography trips.
These include discussions on new experiences and things I have learned along the way. I
also include a lot of information on the areas where I photograph. By reading these, you
may learn from my mistakes or be inspired to take your camera on a boat or visit the places
I talk about. To summarize my experience as an amateur photographer, start with my

A Florida Bay experience, August 25, 2007: dancing egrets,
identifying shorebirds, and summer storms.
Location: Florida Bay at Flamingo, Everglades National Park
Brown Pelicans in mass quantities, September 1, 2007: roseate
spoonbills standoffish, winter season is coming.
Location: Chokoloskee Bay, Everglades National Park
Back in the kayak, September 2, 2007: two photographers, two
boats and a return to the island of birds.
Location: Biscayne Bay from Deering Estate
High tide & wind, September 8, 2007: creatures of the mangroves,
moving along through the creeks looking for crabs & snails.

Tern wars on Chokoloskee, September 22, 2007: the roseates are
a no-show, the shorebirds are back, pelicans are settled in for the
winter and the sandwich terns fight over prime real estate.

Tripod in the water, September 29, 2007: setting up for sunrise
shots with the tripod, shooting without image stabilizer is not the
end of the word, mangrove art, a giant blue crab & snowy egrets.

A new camera, October 13, 2007: choppy water, cloudy sky,
powerboaters, and a new camera on board. All these things posed
challenges and new learning experiences.

Practicing the flight shots, November 3, 2007: Everglades in the
fall, learning the Flamingo area, Osprey are beginning to nest and
an island filled with brown pelicans and cormorants.
Location: Florida Bay at Flamingo, Everglades National Park
A weekend in the Ten Thousand Islands, November 10 & 17th,
2007: Chokoloskee Bay and the East River. The white pelicans
are back in Chokoloskee Bay, two bald eagles, oyster catchers and
a beautiful paddle on the East River.

An overnight trip on Fisheating Creek; photography
challenges on the creek and a new lens.
Spring/summer day paddles for 2008 begin on Chokoloskee
Bay, April 19th. Challenges of using a zoom lens (Sigma
APO, 70-200mm, f2.8) with a teleconverter (Sigma 2X);
oyster catchers, osprey and brown pelicans.
Spring/summer day paddles for 2008 continue on Biscayne
Bay, May 10th. A perfect photography day full of birds and
meeting up with another photographer on the water.
LATEST: A bird rookery in Biscayne Bay; an ongoing
photojournal of my summer visits to this active rookery.
